Part One

Part one of the recorded proceedings of the Housing Emergency Conference held on October 3rd 2015 in Liberty Hall, hosted by Housing Action Now in association with the Geography Department of Maynooth University. This session is chaired by Claire O’Connor from Inner City Helping Homeless. Recorded by Tommy Gavin.

The first speaker is Rory Hearne as he introduces the conference, and articulates the need for a real housing strategy, and for a grassroots coalition of those affected, activists, trade unionists, and academics to fight for it.

The second speaker at 12:30 is Claire O’Connor, and she explains the work done by Inner City Helping Homeless and the policies they back based on the reality on the ground.

The third speaker at 17:30 is Peter McVerry and in his presentation he describes the housing sector stakeholders that are perpetuating the housing crisis, and describes why the government has an urgent responsibility to recognise this problem.

The fourth speaker at 30:30 is Danielle, who is presently homeless, and she describes how she was given the wrong information by Dublin City Council and the huge stresses of living in homelessness.

The fifth speaker at 34:30 is Councillor Catherine Connolly (Ind) from Galway, and she explains how the housing crisis has spiraled out of control in Galway. She details the fundamental changes in housing that have occurred under this Fine Gael/Labour Government.

The sixth speaker at 44:20 is Michael Taft from Unite, where he sets out a robust alternative housing model that is not for profit.
